E.L.F Studio Eyebrow Kit: Brow Painting Makes Easy!

Hello, gorgeous!

I've been tremendously busy lately and because of that, I did not have time to take pictures, edit them, and write reviews. As a result, I got into this "I have nothing to review" mood that potentially can cause me to spend more money to buy more stuff without taking pictures of them. Lucky me, I remember back in September, I took a lot of pictures of products I bought a loved. It turned out I did spend some time editing them and they are good to go. What a lifesaver, right?

Remember my eyebrow how-to post I did back then? (If you haven't read it, click here to refresh your memory.) In that tutorial, I used the brow kit from NYC because the color matches me the best. However, NYC decided to phase out the Browster and I did not know that. Therefore, I had to force myself to find a replacement before finishing up the beloved Browster.

I've heard about E.L.F Studio eyebrow kit for a while and most reviews are positive. It took me a while to get this kit because of the ridiculously high shipping ($7 USD!) Also, some reviews about E.L.F customer service were not so positive so I decided to wait. I still have plenty of NYC Browster to last me until the end of this year or more and I definitely was not in panic mode.

And wait I did, until I got that 75% off coupon in summer. And shop I did, I bought me some Studio Powder brushes and an eye kit. It was a good day.

I bought my kit in dark, which is the darkest shade available. This product is housed in a black sleek plastic case that somewhat resembles that of NARS eyeshadow duo. The size is very generous and I believe it contains more products than the Browster kit.

Closeup at the Dark eyebrow kit

In the above picture, the dark side on the left contains a waxy tinted brow gel. The consistency is between a wax and a gel, which means it is not too thick or too thin. The right side houses the brow powder, which looks a lot lighter in the picture. This kit also includes a dual end brush, which is not really useless. The slanted end is quite well-made despite the small size.

I find this brow kit easy to use, almost goof-proof. If I just want holding power, the waxy brow gel does the job. However, if I want dramatically dark eyebrows, I add the powder on top of the gel. The holding power is great, I sweated under the sun and it did not move an inch.

However, the only caveat I have is the color. While I intentionally bought the darkest shade, it still looks light on me. On top of that, the brow powder has some sort of reddish pigments in it. (Click here to see what I mean.) Therefore, it is not a really good match for me. Also, when using the powder, I make sure to use a light hand as it is very pigmented.
From E.L.F Website:

Brow Gel Ingredient: Paraffinium Liquidum (Mineral Oil) , Ricinus Comunis (Castor) Seed Oil , Talc , Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax , Ozokerite , Methylisothiazolinone , Caprylyl glycol
May Contain: Iron Oxides(CI 77491 CI 77492 CI 77499) , Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)

Brow Powder Ingredient: Talc , Mica , Caprylic/Caprictriglycerides , Hydrogenated Polyisobutene , Sodium Dehydroacetate May Contain: Iron Oxide(CI 77491 CI 77492 CI 77499)
Would I buy it again? Maybe not, since the color is not a good match. If E.L.F comes out with something better, I may give it a try. I am quite happy with the consistency of this product and its ease to use. Some E.L.F dollar items already arrived at my neighbor Target. I can't wait for the Studio line to come next March as well.

My rating: B

That's all for today, folks. Do you paint your eyebrows? If you do, what do you use? Also, what do you think of this kit? Please comment, ok?

  1. Thanks for the review, I was wondering about this. It sounds like a good product but I don't like purchasing brow kits online as I'm always scared to pick the wrong color.

  2. I have that elf kit too. I don't remember which color though. I don't think the color is right either. Have you tried anastasia brown pencil in medium ash? I never thought that color would work, but for some reason the ashy color works on my black brows. The only bad thing is the price. I've only played with it at sephora.

I found the nyc browser at ulta the other week. I haven't tried it yet. Is the wax any better than the elf or is it greasy. (i've heard that) I'm not sure if I should return it or not..

  3. Hi Gio,

The color match is a pain because I could not see how well it performed either. So I shot for the darkest color. It's very easy to use, though, and I would probably use the waxy gel side to groom my brows.

  4. Hi Stephanie,

I got a sample of Anastacia brow powder once and I really don't remember which one was a good match. I think the less darker color of the dark duo was good for me. And the price is so expensive! That's why I haven't bought it yet.

The NYC wax is indeed very thick and I barely use it at all. The ELF waxy gel is a lot better. The NYC powder, on the other hand, is very good though. If your brow color matches it, I highly recommend the NYC one.

  5. I have got to try this stuff! For me, Elf products are usually hit or miss. This looks like something that would hit! Its next to impossible to find a good inexpensive brow kit. Thanks for the review!

  6. Hello My Makeup Habit,

So far, the two products I ordered from ELF Studio are very decent. You should give this a try. It is good if your brow color is a match.
