Food in Vietnam, Part 2: Snacks et. al.

Hi everyone,

This weekend, I took an impromptu trip with my parents to Ca Mau. It is the southernmost area of Vietnam with a lot of delicious food. Since I arrived, I've been enjoying a lot of good food and accumulated quite a few pictures of snacks to make a nice post.

My cousin took me to Vincom Center: a place that sells expensive stuff I can't afford
Make Up For Ever counter is over there. Prices are the same as in Sephora whereas the MAC counter across the street charges double.
But they do have nice ice-cream in the basement: Bud's of San Francisco

Get Supple Skin with Vaseline Intensive Rescue Repairing Moisture Lotion

Hi everybody,

When winter comes, our skin flashes the S.O.S signal to us. In this case, S.O.S stands for "Save Our Skins." Two years in a row, the U.S has experienced extremely cold winters. Since I went through the Bitter Winter of 2010, this year I wised up and lotioned up until I left for the tropical country of Vietnam. But for two months, my skin was in a state of bliss thanked to Vaseline Intensive Rescue Repairing Moisture Lotion.

Kiss Me Heroine Make Long&Curl Mascara is a BaAad One!

Hi everybody,

Remember what my Secret Santa gave me during Christmas? Yup, I'm talking about the Kiss Me Heroine Make Long&Curl mascara set. It took me a lot of willpower to finish up the previous mascara (L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes) before I began using Kiss Me Heroine Made mascara. And boy oh boy, this Japanese mascara ain't playin'. It is the real deal. I'm talking about non-smudging waterproof mascara in its finest.

How can I begin with this review? Let's start with the packaging:

Music: "Pretty Girl Rock" by Keri Hilson

Hi everybody,

I've been listening to Keri Hilson's "Pretty Girl Rock" with a certain degree of obsession. I mean, who did her makeup in this video clip?

She was transformed from Josephine Baker to Dorothy Dandridge to Diana Ross to Donna Summer to Janet Jackson and finally, to T Boz in TLC. In each transformation, she actually looked very similar to these famous female entertainers to the point that's quite scary! Her makeup when she is Keri is simple, yet flawless. I'm very tempted to recreate it. What do you think?

The Skinny Skin Skin

Hi everybody,

Since I came back to Vietnam, I got a huge crop of zits on my face. I know, tale as old as time but acne has been a big problem since I reached puberty. As I became older, my understanding of how my skin works has become a lot better, too. The main reasons for the huge breakout of 2011 are: (a) the extreme heat and humidity in Vietnam, and (b) pollution. When I was in Mui Ne, the air was clean and my zits actually calmed down. But once I reached Saigon, they came back. To add to the insult, I forgot to pack a tube of zit cream with me while I thought I did. Shame on me!

After two weeks of figuring out a skincare regimen to fit this weather scenario, I finally bumped into something that works. My Baumann skin type is OSPT (oily, sensitive, pigmented, tight) or skin type number 5. It does not change when I move to Vietnam, it just gets oilier. I am thankful for being able to figure out my skin type so I can customize products to fit it. The things that work so far are:

1. NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash

Since I had weight restriction on my luggage, I had to pick and choose the skincare products to bring with me. Luckily, I brought NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash with me and it was one of the best decision I made for this trip. While it was too drying to use on a daily basis in the winter while I lived in the Sunshine State, it is golden in this hot and humid weather. Not only it washes away the oil and dirt, the AHA and PHA in this face wash also helps shed away dead skin cells. Since I started using this product again last week, my skin has been less bumpy.

Belly at Large: No, I Won't Hold It Against Britney

Hello humans,

Wow, yours truly is exhausted! Since la mamarazzi went to Vietnam, I've been so emo. To cheer myself up, I decided to read some Naruto. So far, I'm at volume 27. I think the whole story was based on my young life as a kitten. After all, I'm so fierce and handsome. Am I right or am I right?

I stayed up all night reading Naruto :)
And then, guess what? Britney's new music video "Hold It Against Me" was released yesterday. I waited and waited to take a crack at it but then I fell asleep again. It's so hard out there for a cat who reads Naruto, yo! But la mamarazzi, being a tiger mom that she is, had to tweet about it. The woman wanted my opinion, for Heaven's sake!

Normally, I don't do this kind of thing. I am a cat, not a consultant. And I <3 la Britney. But as a cat, I'm also curious. It's my nature and I can't ignore new things. So I went online and took a look at the vid. If you haven't watched it already, I embedded it for you. See, humans, I do love you and I do care about you. Although it's so hard to type without opposable thumbs.

You want to hear what I think? Jump, humans, jump!

Food in Vietnam, Part 1: Happy Pancakes and Tiny Pancakes

Hi everyone,

During my trip to my grandparents' house in Mũi Né, I got a chance to eat a lot of good food that I haven't eaten in a decade! Needless to say, I was delighted. Mũi Né is a small city in Central Vietnam. When I grew up, it used to be wild and natural. Now, Mũi Né is a resort town that resembles Orlando or Miami, FL. I was quite shocked to see the abundant amount of tourists roaming the streets even in the middle of the night. After all, I came from Florida and this little town looks exactly like a tourist spot somewhere in the Sunshine State!

Anyways, enough about me being shocked. Let's go on about the food. Vietnam, as far as I can tell, has really good food. I'm serious. I'm getting fat already and it's only 2 weeks! Food is everywhere and food is delicious. I've been eating and eating until I break and then I would eat some more. Since Mũi Né is a city by the sea, fresh seafood is abundant. The two days I was there, I thoroughly enjoyed eating fresh fish like it was no tomorrow.

There are 3 things you need to eat in Mũi Né, besides fresh seafood. I ate 3 of them but didn't get a chance to take pictures of the last one. Boo! Anyways, the two that I am showing you today are quite interesting. They are pancakes made from clay molds. The first one is bánh xèo or happy pancake and the second one is bánh căn, which I call tiny pancakes. They are made of ground rice flour and guess what? Both types of pancakes are awesomely delicious!

Bánh xèo (happy pancakes)

Correcting the Past

Hi everyone,

Week 2 in Vietnam and my blog landed in the land of the Kaput. My plan to blog about awesome things here hit an epic failure T_T. After coming back from the beach*, I went from one medical facility to another. Don't worry, nothing major happened. I have a bunch of minor corrective surgeries. Just imagine 10 years of not taking care of myself and you get the idea.

Right now, I'm recuperating but it's not even over. I still have another corrective surgery to do and with this done, I won't be able to do FOTD for a while until the wounds are healed. With this said, I am not doing any plastic surgeries. No, not at all! I chicken out when it comes to the nip/tuck department. I don't like pain at all. But I have to do these surgeries since they do affect my eyes.

I sincerely apologize for my lack of posting this week and the upcoming weeks. Also, for those who are hard-core makeup fans, I also apologize for not blogging more about makeup. Since coming to Vietnam, my focus has totally shifted. There are so many things I want to talk about beside makeup and I hope you will allow me to do it.

*My grandma's house is near the beach. The trip was more of a visitation than a vacation :)

Belly at Large: Missing My Bel-Bel

Hi everybody,

This week, I'm blogging on behalf of Belly. Home kitty is too emo to send me a post. I called my neighbor last week and got a chance to talk to Belly, who was so excited to hear my voice that he licked the phone. I miss that fuzzy face and his morning breath when he tried to wake me up so early in the morning. Belly is such a dear to me and I just want to squeeze him up.

Before I left, we did an impromptu photo session. As usual, Belly was poise but somehow, his poses were different this time.

"Heeeey!"
Belly's classic stank eyed look
"What? You still takin' pitchur?"
I lol-ed whenever I saw this picture. Do you see what he did?
Belly covered his sensitive parts before giving the eyes. As if I would grope him while he was sleeping!
Soft kitty :)
I miss him so badly. Right now, I'm a crazy cat lady without a cat. Which means, I'm just plain crazy! I want to kiss his forehead very much. Belly always seemed surprised when I did so.

That's all for now. I'm travelling this weekend and will be back on Monday. Therefore, we are going to have a late V-Day post. Stay tuned for that, will you?

Can You Handle E.L.F Studio Stipple Brush?

Hi everybody,

Although I haven't owned MAC 187 yet, I'm kind of a fanatic when it comes to dual fiber brushes. When done right, these brushes can make your foundation application look flawless. When E.L.F came out with their own version of the stippling brush, I said "Hallelujah, finally!" I was so happy when they had that 55% off sale and I went online to order two of them. It took almost a month to arrive and I almost missed the deadline for the Secret Santa. However, the biggest blunder was: I only received one brush. After emailing E.L.F to straighten things out, I got my money refunded to me, although I would much prefer to receive two brushes instead of one.

E.L.F Stipple Brush ($3)
At $3 a pop, E.L.F Studio Stipple Brush is considered the cheapest dual fiber brush out there. However, the question is: does it live up to its standard? Find out after the jump!

A Lilliputian Experience

Hi everyone,
Source
First of all, I did not intend for the "and beyond" part in the tag line to carry intensive information about my somewhat mundane life in a faraway land. I know y'all want makeup and product reviews and all that jazz. Believe me, I'll give it to you soon. But for now, with my clothes still scattered around at a Goodwill in the Sunshine State, I faced a dire dilemma: I'm out of clothes.

Yes, for real. No clothes except the ones I wore on my body once I landed in Vietnam. To even make it worse, the top is pure cashmere. With the 75 degree Fahrenheit temperature in the local area, wearing cashmere is the equivalence of baking yourself to death. No ma'am, that won't do!

Truth be told, leaving to a tropical location during winter was not the smartest move I had ever mad. If things were a lot different, I would prefer a summer trip. Oh well, you can only pick and choose to a certain point.

But again, I digressed. Besides me packing winter clothes for a hot and humid place, I managed to misplaced the few short-sleeved tops I had. They are somewhere in my luggage melee and I just can't find them at the time. On top of that, I packed only a pair of jeans and that's it. My luggage was so full with other things that I had no space for clothes. And as far as I know, clothes are not so expensive here.

Well, yeah. Except for one thing: pretty old me is considered a giant here!

I felt like Gulliver in the land of the Lilliputians. The local shops do not have my size and American brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Diesel resize their clothes to fit the local market. While I fit a size 8 top comfortably in the U.S, size 10 here looks and feels like a snug size 6 in America. I spent the whole day today feeling slightly humiliated when a pile of clothes I collected din't fit.

Needless to say, I had shoddy luck with buying tops today. Jeans, however, were a lot better. Since I have a long torso, my legs are considered to be short. For years, I struggled getting new jeans in the U.S. But once I got home, I found two nice pairs of fashionable straight legged jeans that hit at the right spot. I got two pairs to wear with a bloussant shirt and I have to say, the whole get-up is very comfortable!

So yes, I feel like a giant here and I miss out on the nice clothes that are around size 0-6. And yes, this teaches me a lesson on how to prioritize my luggage. For the record, in American sizes, I'm in the normal range. But for Asians in Asia, I'm huge.

How about you? Have you ever had an experience like this? Please share, ok?

Pack Smart While Travel

Hi everybody,

Oh man, it's Monday already? I've been scratching my head to think of a topic for today and apparently, 20+ hours in the air really jumbled my brain. Believe it or not, I had to part with a whole lot of makeup. Good makeup. Being a beauty blogger, this is the equivalence of committing treason to your own trade. I know, I know. I wouldn't do that in a better circumstance. But in my case, prioritizing was the only way to go.

Now, on today's post, we are talking about the non-extreme case of traveling with makeup. Why are we even talking about this?

Because, duh! *scratch head*

Ok, that's a tad condescending. I'm sorry. Again, my butt is still sore from the plane ride. But the real reason is, we girls want to keep ourselves looking pretty at any place. However, with all the new regulations and weight restriction*, it's better to pack smart. Let me show you the light after the jump, alright?

Blogging from Vietnam

Hi everybody,

This is going to be a quick update. I'm back in Vietnam after a 20+ hour trip. It was a butt-numbing experience and I was starving most of the time. However, it was a good flight and I didn't have a lot of trouble with my luggage.

For those of you who intent to travel to Vietnam, here are some preliminary updates in social networking sites:
  • Facebook is blocked solid: I tried accessing via a proxy site without any luck. I guess that movie "The Social Network" was to blame. However, I don't use FB that much and I'm glad...
  • Twitter is still available! So please follow me @MyMakeupBlog
  • Blogger is OK, too. I'm blogging from Vietnam for a while, I guess.
On the other hand, Belly was very mad at me for leaving him. He refused to look at me in the eye the day I left. I miss him already and my neighbor is going to take care of him. This is the year of the Cat in Vietnam but Belly could not celebrate it with me :(

That's all for now. I'm glad to be home and I feel jet-lagging right now. It's 1:31 AM over here and my eyes are wide open. Just give me a couple of days to get back to my rhythm and I'll be blogging in no time.
